NTFC Junior coaching
& Learning Principles

As a proud member of the Northern Suburbs Football Association (NSFA) our club is guided by the principles and approach of the NSFA, whilst following the clear coaching framework set by the of Football Federation Australia (FFA).

The National Football Curriculum distinguishes two phases of learning for junior football:

1. Discovery Phase (Under 6 - 8s)

Focuses on:

  • An introduction to the game

  • Natural development, being themselves

  • Being part of a team

  • Having fun!

All our Coaches are Grassroots qualified and parents harbouring an interest in coaching are encouraged to attend a ALDI MiniRoos Grassroots Coaching Course. They are a free, 3 hour course focussed on fun activities and held locally by the NSFA throughout the year.

Our club has a dedicated Coaching Coordinator to oversee and mentor coaches in our younger age groups.

More information on the Grassroots can be found here

2. Skills Acquisition Phase (Under 9 - 13s)

Focuses on:

  • Four functions (First touch, striking the ball, running with the ball and 1v1)

  • A solid foundation of technical skill

  • Fundamental tasks and roles of each position on the field

  • Maintaining the fun!

All our Coaches are Grassroots and Skills Training qualified. Any parents or players (U15 and over) interested in coaching this phase are encouraged to attend a Skills Training Coaching Course. The course is conducted over 14 hours, fully practical and focusses development of the four functional game skills, These are held locally by the NSFA throughout the year.

More information on the Skills Acquisition Phase can be found here

3. Game Training Phase (Under 14 - 16s)

Focuses on:

  • Development of tactical awareness

  • Perception

  • Decision making

All our Coaches are Skills and Game Training qualified. We also have a Class C and XLR8 qualified coach to mentor and oversee the further development of coaches during this phase. It is mandatory for any coaches or senior players to attend a Game Training Course. The course is conducted over 14 hours, fully practical and provides the coach with training sessions designed to help the player apply the Functional Game Skills in a team setting. These courses are held locally by the NSFA throughout the year.

In 2019 the club provided C-Level qualified coaches for our U15 Super League squad
