NTFC Junior coaching
& Learning Principles

As a proud member of the Northern Suburbs Football Association (NSFA) our club is guided by the principles and approach of the NSFA, whilst following the clear coaching framework set by the of Football Federation Australia (FFA).

The National Football Curriculum distinguishes two phases of learning for junior football:

1. Discovery Phase (Under 6 - 8s)

Focuses on:

  • Grass roots and introduction to the game

  • Playing a natural game, being themselves

  • Making their own decisions

  • Working on ball mastery

  • Being part of a team

  • Having fun!

Coaches within our club of the U6 - U8s teams are all encouraged to attend a Grassroots Coaching Course. These are free, 2.5 hr-long courses, held throughout the year by the NSFA.

The club will also have SAP qualified coaches on hand at training sessions to oversee and mentor the coaches of these younger age groups.

More information on the Discovery can be found here

2. Skills Acquisition Phase (Under 9 - 12s)

Focuses on:

  • Development of the four core skills (striking the ball, first touch, 1v1, running with the ball)

  • A solid foundation of technical skill

  • Tasks and role of each position on the field

  • Individual's impact on the whole team

  • Having fun!

Coaching of the Skills Acquisition Program over these years will form a strong foundation of development leading into the youth leagues beyond Under 12s.

In 2019 the club will provide qualified coaches at the training sessions for each of the age groups from U9 - U15s.

More information on the Skills Acquisition Phase can be found here
